Careers Programme

Careers education, information, advice and guidance programmes make a major contribution to preparing young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.  A planned progressive programme of activities supports them in choosing pathways that suit their interests and abilities and helps them to prepare for transitions within school and beyond, to follow a career path through an ever-changing workplace and lead to sustained employability throughout their working lives.

Careers education at Cromer Academy is provided as a comprehensive programme during a timetabled lesson as part of the PSHE programme.  Furthermore, each year during ‘Careers Week’ every subject devotes a full lesson to discussing careers related to the knowledge and skills developed within that subject.

Additional guidance is delivered during assemblies and form times at appropriate times throughout the academic year and this is supported by visits to careers fairs, workplaces and visits from guest speakers from a wide range of industries.

All Year 10 pupils are provided with the opportunity to take part in a one-week work experience placement.  During work experience, pupils will demonstrate employability skills such as communication, organisation, problem-solving, independence and teamwork.  It helps develop confidence and a better understanding of the workplace in general as well as one or more roles in particular.  It is also an opportunity to put into practice our school’s values of hard work, confidence, determination, kindness and respect.

A qualified Level 6 Careers Advisor is on-site a minimum of one day every week.  All Year 11 pupils are provided with at least one face-to-face interview to assist with the post-16 transition and further appointments are made available for those pupils when additional support is required.

Pupils in Year 11 should belong to the ‘Futures 2023’ Google Classroom.  This will be used to provide up-to-date information with regards to colleges and sixth form open days and events.  In addition, the classroom will be used to advertise notable apprenticeship opportunities that become available throughout the academic year.

You will receive an invitation to join the classroom when it is launched at the beginning of the academic year.  Alternatively, you may use the following link:

For Employers

Research from the Education and Employers Taskforce shows that a young person who has four or more meaningful encounters with an employer is 86% less likely to be unemployed or not in education or training and can earn up to 22% more during their career:

Our aim is for every pupil to encounter employers from the widest possible range of sectors and industries.  In order to achieve this, we need the continued support of local employers to share their experience and expertise to engage with our students.

If you are a local employer or have a passion for your chosen career we would invite you to support us in the following ways:

  • Speak at a year group assembly.  You may wish to discuss your own personal story and career path, a typical day in your job and those aspects that you find most enjoyable, rewarding, interesting or challenging.  You can also speak about the range of different jobs available in your industry and any wider issues that may be relevant to our pupils.

  • Allow pupils to benefit from your knowledge and expertise by leading or participating in a QA session within a GCSE lesson.

  • Deliver one or a series of practical workshops with small groups.  These may be related to your industry or employability and interview skills.

  • Offer a work experience placement to a Year 10 pupil.  Not only does this help our students develop their understanding of the workplace but employers will benefit from the hard work expected from our students and often discover a future employee.
